Evenos string quartet is performing at the second concert of the Festival
On the second evening of the 4th International Festival of Chamber Music Convivium Musicum, on Wednesday, 15th March 2017, we will listen the performance of Evenos string quartet from Germany. The quartet consists of young and successful musicians who have been educated at the University of Music and Dance in Cologne, the Royal Conservatory in Antwerp and Folkwang University of Arts.
Members of the ensemble are Ivan Knezevic, violin (Serbia), Ioannis Petrakis, violin (Greece), Odysseas Lavaris , viola (Greece) and Mathieu Jocqué, cello (Belgium). These four musicians, although of different origin, are building their common musical language since 2012. By combining their skills and knowledge, they achieved significant success in the field of chamber music. The awards, co-operation with well-known artists, as well as many international appearances testify to the exceptional quality of the Evenos string quartet. We are confident that their mastery and expression in the performance will win over the audience of this year’s Festival.

The Evenos String Quartet was formed in the German city of Essen in 2012 by four string players with international roots all being graduates of music conservatories in North Rhine-Westphalia. In 2013, the four musicians started the Master of Music Instrumental study course for the major Chamber Music at Folkwang University of the Arts with Prof. Andreas Reiner. After having graduated successfully, they were accepted for the Folkwang Concert study course of excellence in 2015. Their Chamber Music studies in the class of Prof. Andreas Reiner are accompanied by their own Folkwang concert series as well as by numerous national and international performances.
In summer 2014, the Evenos* String Quartet debuted with a concert tour in Greece which continued in 2015 thanks to its tremendous success. As part of this concert tour, the ensemble initiated a musical and educational cooperation with young music students in Greece.
The Evenos String Quartet focuses on a broad and multifaceted repertoire currently including works by composers from Joseph Haydn and Arvo Pärt to Boris Joffe. The quartet has proven its musical versatility in numerous appearances in Germany and abroad and was invited to the Open Auditions of WDR3 (West German broadcasting) in Cologne in November 2014.
Their international breakthrough was the ensemble’s successful participation in the International Competition ‘Paper de Música de Capellades’ in Spain in spring 2015. There, the Evenos String Quartet was awarded the first prize straight away, which gave them regular concerts in Spain, Catalonia 2016. In addition, they won the KöhlerOsbarprize for string quartet in Duisburg in May 2016.
Artistic partners of the Evenos String Quartet include renowned artists like Claudio Bohórquez, Gareth Lubbe, Julian Arp and Ewa Kupiec. The quartet is currently funded by the Villa Musica foundation of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.
The young musicians from Greece, Serbia and Belgium received their musical education with distinguished instrumentalists of the “Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln” (HfMT Cologne), the “Orchesterzentrum|NRW”, the Royal Conservatoire Antwerp and Folkwang University of the Arts.
* The term ,,evenos” is Greek and means ebony, the wood from which the fingerboard of a string instrument is made.
